Edgard & Cooper becomes the first dedicated pet food company to set approved science-based targets

Carbon Intelligence has supported Edgard & Cooper to become the first dedicated pet food company to set science-based GHG reduction targets.

As part of the Edgard & Cooper Zero Pawprint Plan, the pet food manufacturer aims to reach zero carbon in their operations by 2025 and reduce emissions in their supply chain by 2030 in line with a 1.5 degree trajectory. “It’s clear we have no choice, but to limit warming to 1.5°C if we want to have a chance to adapt to our new reality and a planet to enjoy.” says Co-founder Louis Chalabi.

SBTi has approved the following targets using a streamlined target validation route exclusive to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs):

  • Edgard & Cooper commits to reduce absolute scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions 50% by 2030 from a 2018 base year, and to measure and reduce its scope 3 emissions.

The targets covering greenhouse gas emissions from company operations (scopes 1 and 2) are consistent with reductions required to keep warming to 1.5°C.

The Edgard & Cooper team worked with Carbon Intelligence to measure the organisation’s carbon footprint from farm to bowl – which revealed that 87% of their greenhouse gas emissions comes from their ingredients. Together we created a roadmap to reach their Zero Carbon goal, by cutting their ‘farm to bowl’ emissions by 2025, rather than just relying on offsetting. This will require changes to all aspects of their business – from switching to electric vehicles and trucks to launching new products.

Pawprint Manager, Barbara de Brouwer, is leading the company’s efforts. “Setting science-based targets has really challenged us to think completely differently about our whole business and push ourselves further.” says de Brouwer. “It will be challenging as we’re growing so rapidly, but we’re working on some really exciting projects at the moment as we explore how to meet our targets.

Susie Chalk, Senior Consultant at Carbon Intelligence, worked closely with the team at Edgard & Cooper applauded the commitment saying “Edgard & Cooper is showing impressive ambition by going beyond the established carbon reduction pathways for SMEs. Their customers should have confidence that the Zero Pawprint Plan will deliver a net zero pathway that is credible and has real impact.”

Carbon Intelligence considers setting a science-based target as one of the strongest and most credible ways a company can demonstrate their commitment to tackling climate change. We are proud to have  worked with 1 in 3 UK companies on their approved science-based targets. Find out more here.
