As the world transitions to net zero, the demand for renewable energy is expected to increase dramatically, with growth to meet this demand already well underway. The challenge we now face is how to scale the solar industry in a way that prioritises environmental and social value.
Solarcentury worked with Carbon Intelligence to review the current and future state of ESG within the sector. Together we have produced their latest report ‘Solar: A Force for Good’. This report provides crucial market insight into ESG factors within the solar value chain, including risks and opportunities, and how the solar sector can actively support investors, asset and fund managers to meet disclosure requirements in the changing ESG regulatory landscape. “We call on all players to join us in an industry-wide effort”
Susannah Wood of Solarcentury commented: “The solar industry will continue to experience extreme growth and we want to work with the sector to ensure this is achieved in a sustainable way. In the report issued today, we share insights and case studies from the best and brightest minds in the industry – from investors, industry associations, rating agencies and experts specialising in ESG and renewables. We call on all players to join us in an industry-wide effort; not only provide clean energy at scale, but to do so in a way that places ESG at the forefront of everything we do.”
We also worked with Solarcentury to calculate their own carbon footprint; a challenging project due to a lack of robust data of emissions across the lifecycle of solar assets. It is clear from this programme that collaboration will be key in engaging the whole solar value chain to understand and report on their emissions so that investors can credibly rank and benchmark different solar projects.
“Undertaking this piece of work with Solarcentury has both highlighted the importance of leading by example, and the significance of industry-wide collaboration to tackle large-scale ESG challenges and opportunities. With the huge demand for solar only set to increase, I am excited to see how the industry will rise to the task, and continue to not only provide clean energy, but operate as leaders in all aspects of ESG.”
-Sophie Overington, Senior Consultant, Carbon Intelligence
Solarcentury is calling on all major and minor players to join them in an industry-wide effort to not only provide clean energy at scale across the globe, but to do so in a focused way; by placing ESG at the forefront of the transition to net zero.
